Twenty remaining teams will vie for five state championships beginning Thursday morning at Goodman Diamond in Madison.
Thorp is the only Chippewa County area team that will be in action, but other teams with local connections will aim for wins to advance to Saturday's day of championship games.
Here's what to watch from this week's state tournament:
Champs are back
Three of 2023's state champions are back in Madison aiming for repeats.
Kaukauna (26-0) is seeking a four-peat in Division 1 and opens play as the top seed on Thursday at noon versus No. 8 Hamilton (19-7). The Galloping Ghosts have won a staggering 107 consecutive games and are five wins off matching the longest streak in the history of the United States. Vandebilt Catholic (Houma, La.) won 112 straight games from 1980-83 with Barbe in Lake Charles, La. second with 108 wins from 1988-91.

Brodhead (19-4) is the No. 2 seed in Division 3 after winning the crown a season ago. The Cardinals will meet Middle Border Conference runner-up and No. 3 seed Prescott (19-8) in the semifinals on Friday.
Like Brodhead, Stevens Point Pacelli (26-2) returns to state aiming for a repeat and will attempt to do so as a No. 2 seed as the Cardinals are scheduled to play the first game of the day on Friday versus No. 3 Wisconsin Rapids Assumption (17-6). Last year Pacelli came from behind to beat McDonell 8-7 before besting Oakfield 9-6 for the program's fourth WIAA championship.
Local connections
New Richmond (21-3) is at state for the first time since 1995 as a No. 5 seed in Division 1 and will meet No. 4 Milton (24-2) in the final quarterfinal of the day on Thursday afternoon. The Tigers advanced to state with a 1-0 sectional championship victory over Chippewa Falls, using a run on an infield single in the sixth and strong pitching and defense throughout to clinch the victory. New Richmond won the Big Rivers Conference championship during the regular season and has won three games in a row in the playoffs by one run (Superior 4-3, D.C. Everest 1-0 and Chippewa Falls 1-0).
Prescott played a pair of Western Cloverbelt foes at the end of the regular season before reaching the Division 3 state tournament. The Cardinals beat Bloomer 11-1 in five innings and lost to Fall Creek 1-0 in two of the team's final three games of the regular season and is at state for the fourth time since 2021, most recently finishing as the Division 3 runner-up in 2021.
Fall Creek (28-2) is at the Division 4 state tournament for the first time after outlasting Grantsburg 1-0 in 12 innings for the sectional championship at Casper Park. The Crickets won the Western Cloverbelt championship during the regular season and defeated Glenwood City, Boyceville, McDonell and the Pirates on the way to state. Coleman awaits in Thursday's semifinals and the entire Division 4 field is made up of teams reaching the state tournament for the first time.
