When should you replace the wash plate?

The splines, or raised ridges, along the sides of the wash plate fit into grooves on the drive shaft at the bottom of the washer tub. As these wear down, the wash plate can lose grip and slip off or stop agitating correctly.

Here are some signs your washer’s wash plate needs replacing:

  • Noticeable wobbling, shaking, or off-balance spinning
  • Clothes aren’t getting fully clean, even on heavy-duty cycles
  • Grinding noises coming from the wash plate area
  • The wash plate isn’t turning at all and/or clothes just sit motionless in the water

What you need

  • Replacement wash plate (make sure it’s compatible with your specific washer model before installing)
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Two hooks
  • Socket wrench with 7/16-inch head and a long extension

Disclaimer: The specific tools required may vary depending on the model of your appliance and the type of fasteners used on it. Always consult the user manual or refer to any specific instructions provided by the manufacturer for the recommended tools for your appliance model.

Safety tips

When working on any appliance, remember to keep safety first. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Always power off and unplug your appliance or switch off the circuit breaker before you attempt any maintenance or replacement work. This keeps you safe by eliminating any risk of electric shock.
  • If the appliance has recently been used, give it plenty of time to cool down before working on it.
  • Turn off the water supply at the outlet before beginning repairs. Keep towels ready to catch any residual water in the system when removing parts.
  • Take your time while working to prevent accidents and personal injuries. Rushing is the enemy of precision.
  • Work in a well-lit area so you can see and access appliance parts.
  • Keep your workspace free of clutter and other obstacles. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Never work on internal parts with wet hands. Make sure the work area is completely dry.
  • Check the user manual to see if there are specific installation or safety instructions related to your appliance or replacement part.
  • Be gentle when handling or removing parts. Excessive force might damage the appliance or cause personal injury.
  • Wear insulated work gloves to protect your hands from sharp metal parts and debris.
  • When working with wires, avoid touching any exposed wires or terminals. If you need to touch a wire, use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves to prevent electrical shock.
  • Always take photos or make a note of wiring terminals or other connections before disconnecting them to make reassembly easier.

How to replace the wash plate

Remove the faulty wash plate and install a new one in its place with these steps.

  1. Unplug the washer from the power outlet and shut off the water supply.
  2. Open the washer lid.
  3. Use a flathead screwdriver to pry off the wash plate cap in the center of the washer tub.
  4. Take a 7/16-inch socket with a long extension and attach it to the bolt in the center of the wash plate.
  5. Use the socket and extension to turn the bolt counterclockwise so you can loosen and remove it. If it’s stuck, it may take several attempts to turn and knock it loose.
  6. Insert one end of a metal hook tool into one of the openings around the edge of the wash plate. Insert the other end of the hook into the opposite opening.
  7. Grip both ends of the hook tool and lift up on the old wash plate to remove it from the washer tub. You may need to wiggle it side to side if it doesn’t come up easily.
  8. Drop the new wash plate down into the washer tub so the splines on the bottom align with the splines on the shaft in the tub.
  9. Insert the central bolt through the center hole of the new wash plate.
  10. Attach the socket and extension to the bolt, then turn it clockwise by hand to begin screwing it in.
  11. Use the socket to finish tightening the bolt.
  12. Press the wash plate cap back into place in the center of the tub until it clicks into position.
  13. Plug the washer back in and reconnect the water supply.
  14. Run a short test cycle to make sure the new wash plate is working correctly.
