Florida A&M, or FAMU, the historically Black college and university founded in 1887 in Tallahassee, canceled its homecoming celebrations for 2020 because of the Covid-19 pandemic. This whiskey cooler from Shameeka Ayers, an alumna, is Florida sunshine beamed into a glass. The orange and green are inspired by FAMU's colors; Ms. Ayers calls the drink the Three Strike, inspired by the school's “Strike, Strike and Strike Again” chant. The black tea adds depth and is refreshing year-round. The Uncle Nearest whiskey honors Nathan "Nearest" Green, the enslaved African who taught Jack Daniels how to distill.

Ingredients

Yield:2 to 4 servings

  • 3black tea bags or 1 tablespoon loose black tea
  • 4large mint leaves, plus extra mint sprigs to garnish
  • Ice, as needed
  • 4ounces small-batch whiskey, such as Uncle Nearest 1884
  • 4ounces peach nectar (or mango nectar)
  • 1ounce orange liqueur
  • ½ounce pure vanilla extract

Ingredient Substitution Guide

Preparation

  1. Step

    1

Prepare the tea: Place a kettle over high and bring 2½ cups water to a boil. Remove from heat and transfer 2 cups water to a heatproof vessel.

  2. Step

    2

Add the tea and let steep for 10 minutes. Let the hot tea cool to room temperature. (This yields 2 cups of tea, so you will have some left over; save it for unsweetened iced tea or additional co*cktails.)

  3. Step

    3

Use a muddler to slightly pound the mint leaves in a co*cktail shaker. You’ll smell the fragrance as the oils release.

  4. Step

    4

Fill the shaker halfway with ice, then add the whiskey, peach nectar, orange liqueur, vanilla extract and 6 ounces of the prepared tea. Shake for 30 seconds. Strain each serving into a highball glass halfway filled with ice and garnish with a mint sprig.

Bourbon is a whiskey

Tastes a bit like a peach milkshake made as written! I would reduce the vanilla to a quarter ounce and add a bit of lemon juice, maybe an ounce. It was also just a bit too much liquid for my shaker, I would use a little less ice! Also might be good with rye

Eddie the Yeti

Actually, bourbon is a type of whiskey, as is scotch. This recipe calls for the former or a Tennessee whiskey, such as Jack Daniels.

rita

Brew a pitcher of strong iced tea, sweeten it with Evan Williams Peach Bourbon, stir with a sprig of mint. Enjoy!

Squid!

I found this to be nasty tasting but, that Uncle Nearest whiskey is fantastic! Just sip it straight or over ice!

Susan

How would this be with apricot nectar?

Chris

cut the vanilla to a quarter ounce, and added an ounce of lemon juice.

CSB

I wanted to like this!, but very bland/watery. I made enough for 4. I followed the advice to cut vanilla in hand but it was still too much. I added juice from 2-3 lemons to it and that helped a bit. Maybe some fizz.

Michelle

This was so-so. It tasted watered down, probably due to the tea. I used apricot nectar because that's what was available. Half the recipe fit perfectly in my shaker.

Mary Ellen Halloran

I wonder how this would taste with bourbon, rather than whiskey? Asking mainly because we have lots of bourbon but no whiskey.

Bourbon is only made in the US and has a requirement that it be 51% corn mash. Other whiskey is made with different requirements, but only bourbon is corn based exclusively. Whisky is Scotch, which as other requirements. Rye, on the other hand, is a distinct flavor, a sharper one in my opinion. Personally, I don't care for bourbon, but generally like whiskey or whisky and just love rye.

rbtn

Way too much liquid for the shaker! Don't shake the iced tea. Add that to the glass after straining.

Emily

I did as you said and cut the vanilla to a quarter ounce, and added an ounce of lemon juice. I can imagine why it tasted like a peach milkshake without those changes, but with those changes--yum!
