The first chapter of my PhD research has been published!🥳I present LakeTEMP: a dataset of #Landsat 8 surface water temperature observations and ice phenology estimations for all lakes in the world that are larger than 0.1 km² (~1.4 million).Besides gathering, processing, and cleaning >156 million data points, I - with much help of my awesome co-authors - also determined each lake's temperature and ice cover history for 2013 - 2021. All data are publicly available and I am excited to see them applied to global-scale research and conservation efforts!Access here ➡ https://lnkd.in/edp_gEza#water #limnology #limnologyresearch #waterquality #watermonitoring #remotesensing

We're excited to share the latest publication in the Journal of Remote Sensing:📄 "Predicting Foliar Nutrient Concentrations across Geologic Materials and Tree Genera in the Northeastern United States Using Spectral Reflectance and Partial Least Squares Regression Models"🔬 This study explores the potential of spectral data (400 to 2450 nm) for rapid nutrient assessment in leaves and uncovering the geologic history of soils. By using Partial Least Squares Regression (PLSR), we've successfully estimated essential foliar macro- and micronutrients (Ca, Mg, K, P, Mn, and Zn) across diverse geologic materials and tree genera in the northeastern United States.🌿 This innovative approach could revolutionize how we understand and manage forest health and soil fertility. Don't miss out on these groundbreaking findings!🔗 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/geMcN5g3#remotesensing #spectraldata #foresthealth #soilscience #nutrientmanagement #environmentalresearch #scientificInnovationQian Yu

A groundbreaking study from CSU, Save the Elephants, and ElephantVoices revealed that wild African elephants address each other with name-like calls. This is a rare ability among nonhuman animals. ECE Research Scientist Kurt Fristrup helped uncover these exciting findings by developing a novel signal processing technique to detect subtle differences in call structure. In partnership with lead author Michael Pardo – who conducted the study as an NSF postdoctoral researcher at CSU – Fistrup trained a machine-learning model to correctly identify which elephant a call was addressed to based only on its acoustic features.Learn more: https://buff.ly/4bXELrj #signalprocessing #electricalengineering #elephants

#soil_biology_lab_methodsI have decided to start a series of posts on work we are doing #wurSoilBiology in the Soil Science Cluster WUR. Associated with Soil Health Benchmarks. So let’s talk about: 1) which methods are useful for assessing soil functions, 2) how to harmonise methods and 3) what improvements are needed for current methods, 4) dealing with sensitivity of methods. Love to hear which methods people are interested in or issues they face with measuring soil biology.

DEEP SEA SHARK REVIEW - Our paper that reviews current knowledge of the Pacific sleeper shark (PSS) is now published in Polar Biology. This species is a congener of the Greenland shark (GS) — preliminary work on eye lens radiocarbon indicates PSS grows more rapidly than the GS shark. Our work continues with the use of more PSS eye lenses (small to largest available sharks) to determine the age and growth of this species.
